Harley Davidson makes several styles of motorcycle helmets that will enhance your image. Riding a Harley puts you in a class by yourself, so make sure you get the right helmet so you look as good as you feel with the added benefit of avoiding injuries in case of an accident. The standard for injury protection is set by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

Half helmets are a good choice for people who ride cruisers or for anyone who wants to keep the wind in their hair. It is a DOT approved helmet but is shorter and sometimes called a beanie or shortie helmet. This is as light as it gets. It has a short visor and quick release straps.

Open face or ¾ helmets are basically half helmets with side and ear coverage. Cruisers also like these helmets and some models can accommodate headphones for passenger communication. They are still considered half helmets even though they have a removable material or leather neck curtain.

Full face helmets are usually worn by racers and street bike riders. They provide the greatest protection from injury and are very popular with Harley riders. They also protect from wind, rain, flying debris such as small stones and insects.

Hybrid helmets convert from full face helmets to open face helmets. They have an integrated shield and chin that can be lifted to become an open face helmet.

Whichever Harley helmet suits your style, it should fit properly. There should not be any guesswork in choosing the helmet size. It is not just a matter of small, medium or large. You can get a helmet measuring tape online that you print and cut. It will help you choose the right size helmet depending on the manufacturer.

Once you get the right Harley helmet for you, be sure to read the manufacturers instructions that come with it. Correct care of a helmet will guarantee that it continues to give good protection. Try not to drop it on hard surfaces, and do not clean it with strong chemicals. These can weaken its protective layer. If you want to paint it or add decals, read the instructions first so you use the right type of paint for the plastic composition. Always place the helmet on a flat surface on the pads and not on the shell. Care for your helmet well, and it will care for you. It could save your life.
